Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC)

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) is sponsored by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The mission of EDC is to initiate and develop institutional mechanism to create entrepreneurial culture in science & technology academic institutions and to foster techno-entrepreneurship for generation of wealth and employment. EDCs are established in academic institutions (arts & Science colleges, Engineering colleges, universities, management institutes) having requisite expertise and infrastructure.
SSM College of Engineering was selected as a Nodal centre for Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) in the year 2005 by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi.
The purpose of this centre is to carryout the objectives and activities of National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) in setting up institutional mechanisms which could act as a support system for Technocrat Entrepreneurs in this region. It is SSM’s endeavor to create awareness and spread Entrepreneurship culture among the students, educated youth and the public at large in this Textile cluster of Tamil nadu to meet the challenges posed by the current era of Economic Liberalization, Privatization & Globalization (E-LPG).
A Charity Club with an aim of helping the poor and the needy people of our society including institutions like orphanages, home for the mentally challenged, adopted villages, is a part of the EDC program at SSM College of Engineering having more than 1500 students from all Engineering streams as members.

Objectives

To act as an institutional mechanism for providing various services including information to budding S&T entrepreneurs.
To create Entrepreneurial culture in the Parent Institution and other institutions in the region and to promote the objectives of NSTEDB, including Programmes related to women and weaker sections of the society.
To foster better linkages between the Parent Institution, Industries and R&D institutions in the region and other related organizations engaged in promoting Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) including NGOs and other Voluntary Organization.
To catalyze and promote development of S&T based enterprises and promote employment opportunities.
To respond effectively to the emerging challenges and opportunities both at national and international level relating to SMEs and micro enterprises.

Activities

Organized a Workshop on Export Financing for the Cauvery Hitech Weaving Park investors and our MBA students on 17th Feb 2006.
Organized a Workshop on Export Marketing for the Cauvery Hitech Weaving Park investors and our MBA students on 9th Nov 2006.
Every year EDC organizes Entrepreneurship Awareness Program (EAP) for our final year engineering students.
Organized Workshop on Basic Computer Training Program for the educated and unemployed youth and also for home makers from 15 to 22, May 2006.
Organized a Mega Agricultural Exhibition AGROTECH -2007 in association with Tamil nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on Jan 05, 06 & 07 2007 for the benefit of Farmers.
Organized a Workshop on Basic computer Training to the employees of Tamil nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).
Organized a Workshop on Feasibility Report Preparation for entrepreneurs and students on April 30, 2007.
Organized a Catering Course for Homemakers from 16 - 18 May 2007.
Organized a two days workshop on Textile & Management Training Program for entrepreneurs from Cholopur, Maharastra on Sep 25th & 26 2007.
Organized an Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP) for the final year students on Sep 27 – 29 & Oct 03-12, 2007.
E-week is celebrated by conducting various programs like Guest Lecture, Business Quiz & Paper Presentation on 07th & 08th February 2008.
Organized a Certificate course on Tailoring for the members of Self Help Group (SHG) Komaraplayam on February 21st – 23rd 2008.
Organized a Certificate course on Cooking for the members of Self Help Group (SHG) Komaraplayam on February 26th – 27th 2008.
Organized a Embroidery Course for the members of Self Help Group (SHG) on February 21st – 23rd 2008.
Organized an Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP) for the final year students on July 24th – 29th & August 06th -12th 2008.
Organized a Workshop on Sheet metal fabrication for Unemployed Youth on August 21st -23rd 2008.
Organized a National Conference on Creativity & Innovation in Entrepreneurship development on 18th December 2008.
Organized a Workshop on ERP Solutions for Textile Industry for Entrepreneurs on 05th January 2009.
Awarding Certificates in Diploma in Business Entrepreneurship for the students on 26th June 2009.
Organized a Faculty Development Program (FDP) for Fresher’s & below one Year Experienced Staffs at Kolli hills on 21st & 22nd August 2009.

Functions

To organize Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps, Entrepreneurship Development Programmes and Faculty Development Programmes in the region for the benefit of S&T persons.
To develop and introduce curriculum on Entrepreneurship Development at various levels including degree/diploma courses of the parent institution and other institutes in the region.
To conduct research work and survey for identifying entrepreneurial opportunities (particularly in S&T areas and service sector).
To guide and assist prospective entrepreneurs on various aspects such as preparing project reports, obtaining project approvals, loans and facilities from agencies of support system, information on technologies, etc.
To organize guest lectures, TV & Radio talks, Seminars, etc. for promotion and growth of S&T based entrepreneurship.
To arrange visits to industries for prospective entrepreneurs.
To extend necessary guidance and escort services to the trainees in obtaining approval and execution of their projects.
To act as a Regional Information Centre on business opportunities, processes, technologies, market, etc. by creating and maintaining relevant databases.
To provide testing, calibration, quality assurance, design, tool room, pilot plant and other facilities for entrepreneurs besides expertise in intellectual property rights, patents search, etc..
To render advice to sick enterprises and assist the entrepreneurs in rehabilitating them.
To conduct skill development training programmes leading to self/wage employment.
